The Peace Tree Quilt is made with 100% organic, naturally dyed cotton. The fabric is grown, spun, woven, and dyed in India using SKAL Control Union certified organic methods of production. In addition, only plant materials and non-toxic minerals are used in the dye process. The bleaching is also done entirely with plant materials, so no chemicals are used at any stage of production. The quilt batting is 100% certified organic cotton from Texas. Unlike conventional dye effluent, which is a major polluter of water, the wastewater from the natural dye process is very clean. The wastewater is used to irrigate agriculture, while the used dyestuff becomes compost material. The effluent is completely non-toxic.

The dye process keeps alive a rich history of traditional knowledge of natural dye methods that have been used in India for thousands of years. The company manufacturing the dyed fabric is a small family-run company that employs around 30 employees, who are paid fair wages and enjoy comfortable working conditions. The quilt is handcrafted in Nelson BC, by textile artist Leah Weinstein, who quilts with a hand-guided, long-arm quilting machine. It is intricately pieced with over 100 individual pieces, and makes maximum efficient use of the fabric. Quilts are inherently heirloom objects, but just in case the Peace Tree is not in vogue in 2150, this object is fully biodegradable, having used only renewable plant materials for its contents as well as its colour.
