Creepers is a radical concept that uses decorative light to divide interior space. Clusters of stems appear to float ‘cloud like’ dividing living space with decorative light. The stems are made by a revolutionary rapid prototyping method utilizing selective laser sintering. This allows for the creation of mass customized products. Through mass individualization, the industrial scale production of one-off artifacts, Future Factories seeks to restore the idea of the heirloom. The idea is to create something individual and personal rather than commonplace and disposable. Creepers focuses on minimum material and ultra-low power consumption. The aim was to design a luminaire specifically to exploit the characteristics of the low power variety LED. The apparently chaotic jumble of ‘leaves’ is in fact a series of highly efficient reflectors arranged to maximize the output from tiny LED’s. The reflectors are wafer thin and semi-translucent transmitting a glow to all angles. The form is inspired by growth structures from the natural world. Material is used only where it is structurally required; each stem uses only 16grams of material. Creepers are made of nylon, which is recyclable, and are lit with tiny, low-output LED lamps.
