BICYCLE SHOE

Terra Plana in collaboration with Anti-Apathy
London Bridge, UK

Since 2003, Terra Plana have been making good-looking eco-friendly shoes. Anti-Apathy have always looked for new ways of working that could improve labour standards, help deal with climate change and address issues of global trade and sustainability. Terra Plana have been working with social awareness organization Anti-Apathy since 2005, the outcome of ths collaboration was truly rubbish, or more officially known as Worn Again.

Every year, in the UK, 900,000 tonnes of textiles are thrown into landfills. Worn Again believes some things are just too good to go to waste. Worn Again is a collection of shoes and accessories made from recycled materials from forgotten sources such as leather from car seats, seatbelts, bicycle tyres and recycled rubber for the soles to parachute silk and tweed jackets. Look out for an ingredients label on each product that tells you what rubbish went into making it.

The trainer business isn't pretty. From finding the materials, to the treatment of the people who put them together, to transporting the finished product - making shoes is one of the most resourceintensive, polluting and toxic industries there is. So, making a perfectly ethical trainer isn't easy. But Worn Again is working - step-by-step - to show that it can be done - and that people want it to be done.
