The PlayPump® water system is a children’s merry-go-round attached to a water pump. While children have fun spinning on the merry-go-round, clean water is drawn from underground into a 2,500 liter tank, easily accessible by a simple tap. The system’s storage tanks feature billboards that carry education, health, and consumer product messages. Two of the four billboards on each PlayPump system are reserved for social and public health messages. The other two billboards are sold for product advertising. The advertising revenue establishes a guaranteed source of funds for ten years of pump maintenance. The PlayPump system’s innovative technology provides a unique and sustainable way to address the urgent issue of water access in rural areas, in a simple, practical, economical and environmentallyfriendly manner. Economic sustainability is guaranteed though job creation and the guaranteed revenue stream. Social sustainability comes through community engagement and mobilization. Lastly, environmental sustainability is ensured through use of existing boreholes, when available, and a renewable natural resource – children at play. The PlayPump system is effective and efficient with design features that recycle unused water by diverting the excess from the storage tank back into the borehole. Awards
