At any given moment, about half of the world's poor are suffering from waterborne diseases, of which over 6,000 – mainly children – die each day by consuming unsafe drinking water. Recognizing the importance of safe water in our daily lives and to the billions of people who are still without access to this basic human right, LifeStraw was developed as a practical response the UN’s Millennium Development Goal of reducing by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water by the year 2015.

LifeStraw offers relief from the waterborne diseases of major public concern such as Typhoid, Cholera, Dysentery and Diarrhea. LifeStraw Personal is a portable water purification device that removes 99% of bacteria, viruses and parasites from drinking water in the developing world, providing a complete water treatment facility in a straw. LifeStraw Family is a point-of-use instant microbiological purifier that allows people to create drinking water to US EPA standards in the home. These compatible products are designed to address the needs of the more than 1.1 billion people who lack access to safe and clean drinking water. Both products are designed to be sustainable and user friendly: they do not require electricity, batteries or replacement parts.
